After a lot of hardwork, the projects are complete! A special thanks goes out to Gene, Jack, and Agua Dulce Farms for the opportunity to do this project. It’s our second last day and we are almost there! Even though it’s volunteer day today, we are still very productive. We finished attaching all the chain links to the bottom frame by steel bars. Now the fence walls were straight and tight. For the ground, both side wood edges were assembled and sealed by clay. The middle ground was spread with black sheet and covered by a lay of rocks. Everything was almost done and we looked forward to Friday, the finish day!

It is a long and productive day! Since the interior vertical framing of the wood wall is already attached to the steel posts, We nailed horizontal wood pieces on both side with perfect level. For the chain link walls, we attached free hanging chain links to the bottom frame members with steel bars. We also dig ditches along inside edges of chapel and assembled one side of the wood edge fixed by vertical steel bars so far. There is still some work left, but we are almost there!

This proved to be a very productive Saturday for us! With the other wall secured the remaining concrete footings were able to be poured. The wood wall posts were all cut down to the same height and the cedar boards cut to the right lengths. The interior vertical framing of the wood wall is now attached to the steel posts. It is perfectly level and ready for the horizontal pieces to be added!

The chain-link panels were cut and hung. We had an exciting discovery when the chain-link was attached to the top, but still hanging free on the bottom there were a few panels angled back creating “gills” that opened up at the back. We took a vote and decided these “gills” added to our design and concept, so we cut two new posts that were a little longer to make it happen!

There is still lots to do, but things are really coming together!

Today, we went about completing several different tasks. We wanted to erect at least half of the wood frames for the trellis and also finish the steps which are connected to the retaining wall. Both of these tasks proved to be much more difficult than expected. When we arrived at the site we divided into two groups, one for each of the tasks. The group in charge of steps had to finish bolting the steel plate steps to steel angles so that they could then be connected to the retaining wall. This was the easy part. Once that was done, we had to measure and mark each step along the wall so that we could drill and bolt the steps. We were faced with several problems when doing this. The walls aren’t perfectly level, so that steps had to either be placed diagonally or according to one side, meaning they wouldn’t match up with the other. We decided to go with our second option and we measured and drilled, being careful to place the steps evenly and straight. Unfortunately, we were only able to complete the steps on one side, and we were missing a couple of steps on the other side. The frames created a whole other set of problems as well. First, we had to find a way to connect the wooden frames to the steel angles so that it would be supported on both sides. Also, we had to make connect the wooden frame post to a section of a wide flanged beam so that these could be connected to the concrete footings. There was much to be figured out in that process so that took longer than expected. Once the frame was connected to its various pieces, we went about erecting it, but quickly found out that the staking was incorrect and the hole for the steel angles was too far. So while some people held the frame up others quickly dug the hole closer to the retaining wall. After all of this chaos, we were only able to raise two of the frames. And we still had to brace them temporarily. We learned a lot along the way! Hopefully next week we will be faster now that we have the entire process figured out.

Ed Shed: 4/21 Build Day 5

Placing the final roof trusses and extensions, Saturday proved to be a long but highly productive one, nonetheless! As the day progressed, the group split into two. One group saw to redesigning and building middle transverse wall (now out of wood due to time management). Raising the wall wasn’t as difficult as it seemed but the effects were tremendous. This Ed Shed is starting to look all right.

The second group picked up the sawzall and trimmed the overhang. On the east side there was a need for a 6in overhang to allow for some type of water shedding into a rainwater cistern. On the west side, the aesthetic as well as structural expression that the Ed Shed wants to accomplish deemed it fit to have the overhang on the existing roof truss system to be flushed with the flush with the latitudinal wall, in turn showing off the extension’s own overhang.

The groups merged together after lunch to set in place the remaining roof trusses and extensions. We had to rediscover a means to getting the roof trusses in place (again), but all in all, the Ed Shed is well on its way in becoming a great center for the Agua Dulce Farm.

Truing up the walls proved a bit more time consuming than expected, but better to be patient than end up with wonky walls! We poured the rest of the footings on the wall that is angled in plan, attached all canted members to the top bars, secured the bottom bars and got the other wall ready to pour. We also set and poured the posts for the wood wall, staked out lines and shot elevations for the edging which will define the interior space. Another exciting lizard siting in one of the holes as well.
